How I Got Engaged On A Low Budget
Your Affordable Wedding
Because so many couples think that engagements and weddings cost an arm and a leg, I thought I'd tell you how I got engaged on a low budget.
This was in the olden days. My husband-to-be and I were in graduate school, barely getting by. There was no proposal ~ we just sorta agreed to get married. So that didn't cost anything! Then, we pooled our vast resources and came up with $150 for a ring. We lived on Long Island at the time, and a good friend told us that we could get the most for our money in Manhattan's Diamond District. When we finally got there, I was surprised that instead of a nice jewelry store, there were warehouse-like rooms with counters and file cabinets.
We chose one of the warehouses and told the proprietor how much money we had. He matter-of-factly opened a file drawer, took out a little black drawstring bag, and dumped tiny stones onto the counter. One of these would be my diamond! After we selected one, he pulled out another bag full of settings. Within half an hour, I had my engagement ring!
I can tell you from first hand experience that having a tiny stone in your engagement ring doesn't doom your marriage to failure. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!
